THE FLORIDA YARD

Frequent Tallahassee rains have made the small patch of grass in the front yard into an almost unmowable jungle.  Considering what your yard could be as either a street-to-house vegetable garden or as a 'Florida Yard?'

When I mentioned Florida Yard to a friend who lives near Tampa, she said, 'oh, the ones with cement yards painted in pastel colors or the ones with rocks covering the yard interspersed with fake plastic grass leading to the front door?

Having a true Florida Yard means replacing as much turf as possible with hardy and native plants which eliminates the need to fertilize or irrigate, while creating a unique space for people and critters to enjoy.

Our wonderful Leon County Extension office has materials on creating a Florida Yard (plastic pink flamingos very optional) and check out the Florida Yards website.

WHY BOYCOTTING BP ISN'T THAT SIMPLE

Interesting article in Saturday's New York Times about a boycott is not as simple as not filling up at a local BP station.
