GREEN? OR JUST SILLY?

This 1988 Volkswagen Sirocco is not an economy car, running at  between 25 and 50 times the cost of running a car on gas,

The  car will be driven the 210 miles between Manchester and London powered only by roasted coffee granulesBuilt a team in England from the BBC1 science program, Bang Goes The Theory, the car will go on display at the Big Bang science fair in Manchester to show how fuels other than conventional petrol and diesel can power vehicles.

The car, nicknamed Carpuccino, is calculated to run three miles per kilo of ground coffee - the equivalent of about 56 espressos per mile!  That means the trip will use the equivalent of 11,760 espressos, and the team will have to take 'coffee breaks' roughly every 30 to 45 miles to pour in more granules.  More info here.

From ArfriGadget blog, comes the flexible solar vest work by Boda Baod drivers in Kenya.

Due to lack of space, the cost and the real possibilty of theft, attaching a 'hard solar panel to a bike has never been a viable sustainable option.

The answer evolved with the development of flexible panels that the bike driver can wear on his bike. Attaching the flexible panels on his back ensures that he always has a charged cell phone to receive requests from customers, he has an emergency light with him, he can light his home with an LED light and significantly save on expensive power bills, and the panels are always with him, making them less vulnerable to theft.  He can always offer a charge to his rider if they need a charge for their cell phone. He can charge for a charge?

It can also be hung up in a sunny window at home to continue charging on days when it's not on the bike driver.  Other inventions include a light bulb that runs off batteries, a fuel efficient stove, flat parabolic reflectors, a food dryer and an arc welder that I can't even pretend to understand.

FLORIDA APPLICANCE REBATES

The State of Florida will implement a mail-in rebate program to help residents replace older, inefficient appliances with ENERGY STARTM qualified appliances.  Timed to coincide with Earth Day activities, the program is tentatively scheduled to begin April 16, 2010, and will end April 25th.  s scheduled to last two weeks.

Only new appliances, used personally by consumers are eligible, products include:
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Clothes washers
  • Dishwashers
  • Room air conditioners
  • Gas tankless water heaters
Florida will offer residents a 20% rebate off the price of a new ENERGY STARTM qualified appliance and may also receive an additional $75 rebate with proof of having recycled the old appliance. Florida received $17,585,000 to conduct the program.

These six appliances were selected because they offer consumers the largest energy and water savings and there are no other state rebate programs on these particular appliances.

See Florida Energy and Climate Commission for additional information.
