    BIKE THERE!

In Tallahassee, a local resident has mapped out a convenient 2.5 mile loop downtown, for cyclists and pedestrians called Dowtown Bike Ped Square.

There also is a potentially cool application called GMaps Pedometer. Potentially because the site seems to have crashed, but if it were working, it would allow you to map out a route using Google Maps and calculate not only the distance walked, but calories burned.

Currently, a group out on the west coast (that's Oregon--not Pensacola) has started an online petition to provide a 'Bike There' feature on Google Maps, similar to the 'Drive There' and 'Take Public Transit' options. The idea is to include actual bicycle lanes within a location providing either the most direct route or the most bicycle-friendly route. Right now, byCycle.org features only the metro areas of Portland, Oregon and Madison, Wisconisn. Other folks in around the world are working on similar maps for their locales.

Want to make Tallahassee a safer place to bike? Send your comments and suggestions to our city's bike coordinator:
and utilize the StarMetro 'bike on a bus' program to help you get from here to there. Yikes! What if all of our Green Readers started using this feature? Currently, the bus bike rack only hold two bikes.

The City of Tallahassee and Leon County's Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan was adopted in 2004 and is currently being updated by the Capital Region Transportation Agency. For more information, contact Cherie Horne at the City/County Planning Department.
